The Alcázar of the Christian Monarchs dates back to 1328 and owes its name to the various
monarchs who have lived in the fortress since the city of Córdoba was reconquered by the
Christians in the 13th century. Of all the monarchs who have lived in the Alcázar, the best known
were the Catholic Monarchs, Isabella and Ferdinand. On our visit to the Alcázar of Córdoba you
can discover the history the fortress holds, as well as the impressive gardens housed within the
monument; together with the Mosque-Cathedral, it is one of the main monuments to visit in the
city of Córdoba.
Visit the Alcázar of the Christian Monarchs with our guided tours
On our guided tour of the Alcázar we like to give customers an introductory explanation at the monument’s entrance, so they can place the fortress’s current structure in time. Although today’s Alcázar dates from the 14th century, that does not mean there was no earlier construction in previous years. For example, on our guided tour of the Alcázar we like to begin by talking about the origin of the city in Roman times, when the city’s Roman customs house stood where the Alcázar is located today; later, with the taking of Córdoba by the Muslims, the customs house became the old Caliphal Alcázar.
Discover the gardens of the Alcázar of Córdoba with our tour guides
The gardens of the Alcázar are perhaps the most striking part of the guided tours. Across the large expanse of the gardens we can find all kinds of native trees such as orange trees, lemon trees and cypresses, arranged over three levels: upper garden, middle garden and lower garden. On our visit to the gardens of the Alcázar we love to show our customers the grandeur of these gardens, culminating in the Paseo de los Reyes (Walk of the Kings), where we find the famous sculpture of the Catholic Monarchs facing Christopher Columbus, commemorating the momentous historical event you will discover on our guided tour of the Alcázar.
